A little about Leia

Here it is… the start of my second semester in the mass communication masters program at the University of Florida.  This post, part of my first assignment, is for the course Introduction to Multimedia Communication. It is an introduction by me, about me, to my classmates and instructor.

My name is Leia Hill.  I am 36 years old and live in Meridian, Mississippi.  My husband and I have been married for almost 11 years. We met on a blind date and have been together ever since. He is originally from Cocoa Beach, FL and is a graduate of UF! Part of my reason for seeking this degree is because he wanted me to be a GATOR!

We have two children, both boys, one is five and the other 2. You can see what a typical night is like below.  (Life is fun and very chaotic!)

I graduated from Mississippi University for Women in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in communication.  I have spent the last 14 years working in related fields… marketing, advertising, and public relations.  Most recently, I worked as program coordinator for two community outreach programs that benefited the college foundation in which I worked.  One of which was a learning in retirement program and the other an arts and entertainment series for the community. I held that position for eight years.  I loved my job and the people I planned events for.  Previous to that position, I worked as the community relations director for Rehab Care Group. Before that and for the first four years after graduating, I simultaneously worked as a promotions planner for a local advertising agency and managed 38 residential properties.

After deciding to return to academia, along with other factors, I resigned my position with the College this past July.  Having worked since the age of 14, the past 6 months of not having a full time job has been an interesting transition to say the least.   Currently, I am managing several social media accounts for various businesses in town, managing a household, two children, looking for my dream job, and as stated, working on this degree.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will come back for more!!!

  1. Hey Leia – Quite an interesting life story. I too have been constantly working for someone since I was 19 years old so I understand how difficult the transition is. Being a one man machine, now, brings in a lot of responsibilities some of which may make the operational tasks seem daunting. But hey what is life without any risks? I say routine and boring – there is nothing wrong with routine but when added with boring it becomes a drag and that is something that we do not want.
I believe you will succeed in whatever you do even in Meridian just try to think outside the box and opportunities will hopefully show up. Have a good semester.
